I see that when clicking on a cell, it is drawn as pressed. I want to control when this happens to mimic the two state button style.

Did you try the following styles?

__EGCS_PRESSED_DOWN
__EGCS_PRESSED_UP
__EGCS_PRESSED_DOWN
__EGCS_PRESSED_ELLIPSIS
